The Devil upright meaning
- attachment
- temptation
- habits
- shadow self
The Devil reveals the ties that keep us bound to habits, fears, or desires that no longer serve us. The chains in this card are often looser than they appear. Notice where you feel stuck or driven by impulses rather than choice. This is not about judgment but awareness. Naming what holds you can be the first step toward freedom. You have more power to change your patterns than it may seem right now.
The Devil reversed meaning
- release
- awareness
- breaking free
- reclaiming power
Reversed, The Devil suggests you are beginning to see through something that once held you tightly. A habit, relationship, or belief may be losing its grip. This awareness is powerful. Take small, steady steps away from what drains you, and be patient with yourself along the way. Freedom often begins quietly, with one honest admission and a decision to choose differently next time.
In love
Notice any unhealthy dynamics or attachments; honest conversation can help loosen patterns that feel controlling.
In career
Look at habits or pressures that keep you stuck at work, and reclaim a sense of choice where you can.
The Devil as a yes or no answer
Drawn upright in a yes or no reading, the The Devil leans no. Reversed, the lean stays the same, though the reasons may be more internal.
