What is a tarot birth card?
A tarot birth card is a Major Arcana card worked out from your date of birth. The idea was popularized by tarot authors in the late twentieth century, and it borrows the same digit-adding logic as numerology. Most people get a pair: an outer card that shows how your energy tends to appear in the world, and an inner card that hints at the quieter motive underneath. A few dates give a single card, and one rare total gives a trio.
Like every reading on Omoy, your birth card is a reflection prompt, not a verdict. Read it as a character sketch, keep what rings true, and let the rest go.
How we calculate it
Omoy uses the most widely shared method:
- Add your birth month, day and year as whole numbers. For April 4, 1984 that is 4 + 4 + 1984 = 1992.
- Add the digits of the total: 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21. If the result is still above 22, add its digits again.
- That number is your first birth card. If it is 10 or more, add its two digits to find your second card. 21 becomes 2 + 1 = 3, so this date gives The World and The Empress.
A result of 22 is read as The Fool, paired with The Emperor (2 + 2 = 4). A result of 19 gives three cards: The Sun, the Wheel of Fortune and The Magician.
Birth cards and your life path number
Your birth card and your life path number start from the same date, but they add it up differently, so they will not always match. Many people enjoy reading both side by side: the number as the theme, and the card as the picture.
Tarot birth card meanings
1 ยท The Magician and the Wheel of Fortune
This pair belongs to people who like to turn ideas into something real. The Magician gives you resourcefulness and a knack for using whatever tools are in front of you, while the Wheel of Fortune adds a feeling that life moves in cycles and that timing matters. You may notice that your best moments arrive when you act at the right turn of the wheel, not when you force it. The lesson here is focus: your talents spread easily, and they shine brightest when you choose one aim and commit to it. If you also hold The Sun, add warmth and visibility to the picture, a reminder that your energy lifts the people around you.
2 ยท The High Priestess, Justice and Judgement
Number two cards share a love of truth, whether it is found in quiet intuition or in a clear, fair decision. The High Priestess gives you depth, privacy and a strong inner voice. Justice, if it is yours, adds a steady sense of balance and a need for things to be honest. Judgement, if it is yours, brings moments of awakening, the kind that ask you to answer a calling and leave old stories behind. Together they describe someone who listens closely before speaking and who weighs the whole picture. Your growth comes from trusting what you already sense, then acting on it with fairness and courage.
3 ยท The Empress, the Hanged Man and the World
Three is the number of growth and creation. The Empress gives you warmth, a feel for beauty and a gift for nurturing projects, places and people. The Hanged Man, if it is yours, adds patience and a habit of seeing from an unusual angle, often finding answers by pausing rather than pushing. The World, if it is yours, brings a sense of completion and a wide view, a love of travel, learning and bringing things to a satisfying finish. This group often describes a person who makes life richer for others. Your lesson is to receive as generously as you give, and to let some things ripen in their own time.
4 ยท The Emperor, Death and the Fool
Fours build foundations. The Emperor gives you structure, leadership and the ability to create order where others see chaos. Death, if it is yours, adds a talent for endings and renewals, knowing when a chapter is done and making room for the next one. The Fool, if it is yours, brings openness and a lightness that keeps your structures from turning rigid. This group describes someone who can steady a situation and also reinvent it. Your lesson is to hold your plans firmly enough to build, but loosely enough to let them change when life asks you to begin again.
5 ยท The Hierophant and Temperance
Fives are teachers and learners. The Hierophant gives you a respect for knowledge, tradition and shared values, along with a natural ability to explain and guide. Temperance, if it is yours, adds patience and a gift for blending opposites into something calm and workable. Together they describe someone who looks for meaning and enjoys passing it on. You may be the person others ask for perspective. Your growth comes from finding your own beliefs inside the traditions you inherited, keeping what still fits, and mixing old wisdom with your own experience in moderate, steady steps.
6 ยท The Lovers and the Devil
Sixes are about choice and connection. The Lovers gives you a strong sense of values and a desire for relationships that feel honest and aligned. The Devil, if it is yours, adds intensity and an awareness of the pull of desire, habit and attachment. This group describes someone who feels deeply and is often asked to choose between what is easy and what is true. It is not a warning; it simply means your relationships and commitments are a big part of your story. Your lesson is to choose freely and consciously, so that what binds you is what you actually want.
7 ยท The Chariot and the Tower
Sevens move forward. The Chariot gives you drive, willpower and the ability to steer through competing pressures toward a goal. The Tower, if it is yours, adds a talent for sudden breakthroughs, the clarity that arrives when an old structure gives way. Together they describe someone who makes progress through determination and who is not afraid of change, even when it comes quickly. Your growth comes from directing your energy with intention rather than force, and from seeing unexpected shake-ups as a chance to rebuild on more honest ground.
8 ยท Strength and the Star
Eights carry quiet power. Strength gives you courage, patience and a gentle way of handling difficult feelings, your own and other people's. The Star, if it is yours, adds hope, healing and a sense of renewal, the ability to keep faith after hard times. Together they describe someone whose power is soft but lasting. People may lean on you when things feel uncertain. Your lesson is to offer yourself the same kindness you offer others, and to trust that calm persistence often achieves more than pushing harder.
9 ยท The Hermit and the Moon
Nines seek understanding. The Hermit gives you a reflective mind, independence and a need for quiet time to think things through. The Moon, if it is yours, adds rich imagination, sensitivity and a strong connection to dreams and intuition. Together they describe someone who looks beneath the surface and is comfortable with questions that do not have quick answers. Your growth comes from sharing the light you find, not keeping it only to yourself, and from trusting your inner guidance while still checking it against what is clear and real.
Frequently asked questions
What is my tarot birth card?
Your tarot birth card is the Major Arcana card that matches the digit sum of your full birth date. Most dates give a pair of cards, an outer card for how you show up and an inner card for what drives you quietly.
Why do I get two birth cards?
When the sum is 10 or more, its two digits are added once more to give a second card. Both belong to you: the higher card is often read as the outer face, and the single-digit card as the deeper root.
Why did I only get one card?
If your birth date reduces straight to a number from 2 to 9 without passing through 10 to 22, the method gives one card. You can still read the higher card that shares its number group, which appears in your group below.
Is a tarot birth card the same as a life path number?
No. Both come from your birth date, but they are calculated differently and may not match. A life path number uses numerology meanings, while a birth card points you to a Major Arcana card and its imagery.
Does Omoy save my birth date?
No. The calculation happens entirely in your browser. Your date is not sent to a server, not stored, and cleared when you leave or reload the page.
